Protein treatments
can benefit your hair by strengthening fragile, damaged strands. It’ll also
make them smoother and softer because it’s essentially filling in the hair
shaft. That’s why for those with highly porous strands protein treatments are
your bff. Depending on how damaged your hair is or how often you put stress on
your hair through styling, you’ll want to do these treatments weekly, monthly
or bimonthly.
Keep in mind the current condition of your hair because this’ll
effect how your hair responds to protein treatments. Some naturals avoid
protein like the plague because hair that is low in porosity, or has little to no damage, will have an
adverse effect. Doing protein treatments
too often can also be too much of a good thing. In both situations your hair can
become dry or hard. Deep conditioning your hair afterwards can help fight
against drying. However, if you still see little to no difference you simply
may not need this type of treatment. Your best bet is to experiment with different products or recipes
to discover what works best for your type of hair.
Coconut/Avocado Milk Treatment
3/4 cup coconut milk or 1/2 cup for thicker mixture
1 peeled and mashed avocado
2 Tbsp honey
Using a knife or peeler, peel the avocado and remove the pit.Next, mash the avocado until it's the consistency of mashed potatoes. For a smoother consistency feel free to use a blender.
Add coconut milk and honey until well blended. Personally, I prefer a thicker consistency for an easier application.
Smooth or squish mixture onto your hair and leave on for 30 minutes to an hour. To benefit the most from this treatment use a plastic cap or bag over your hair and add heat. I use a plastic shower cap and a towel over my head. To wash out, whether using shampoo or co-washing, make sure you a very thorough. You don't want the smell of spoiled food on your hair. As stated before, make sure you deep condition after a protein treatment.
